Trapped by complexity

The voice on the phone sounded urgent. Our customer had been handed the IT equivalent of a grenade with the pin pulled, and the stakes were high. The federal government had just decreed a change in the way that their business worked, and had given them a 120 day window to comply. Our customer had spent a decade and over $100 million to create a modern, flexible, service-oriented architecture. It was a model of commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) and custom software; J2EE, XML and web services through and through. It was backed by an ornate and mature process that revolved around solid requirements analysis, use cases and object-oriented (OO) modeling. But our customer was worried. The truth of the matter was that this edifice of modern "best of breed" software had trapped them into a web of complexity. They could produce solid software, but given the inter-connected nature of their beast they could not even start a project in the time mandated, let alone take one from concept through testing and into production.

Simplifying enterprise IT using Boomerang

Our customer found it surprising when we told them the solution to their pressing problems is less, a lot less, rather than the latest, most bleeding edge silver bullet. The idea is to combine the benefits of large scale integration that can be found in sophisticated J2EE and .NET systems without taking on the complexity that naturally comes along. To pull this off required a re-thinking of nearly everything, and a drastic policy of excluding entire families of frameworks and capabilities from the solution. If it did not directly impact and benefit the core of what we were trying to build, we eliminated it. In essence we had to re-think almost everything that had taken place in the last 15 years of IT, and in the process challenge a lot of the canon of what was really a "best practice".

“deliver up to the minute information to leaders and decision makers”

Simplified approach

First and foremost - do not be afraid to examine your current IT systems and architecture. In a typical enterprise, the stress of complexity will not be hard to find.
Ask yourself the following questions:

  • Are you held hostage by the complexity of your IT?
  • Is it impossible to get anything done quickly, or for a reasonable cost?
  • Are you losing opportunities because you cannot respond to emerging or changing market conditions?
  • Are your IT projects increasingly dependent on high priced technical experts who may not even work for you?
Our favorite way to begin to reverse the slide into unmanageable complexity is to employ our cutting edge content integration platform, Boomerang. Call us today to schedule a demonstration of how this technology is changing the rules of IT, and how a simpler approach can benefit you.

A bit of history

In 2006 OSG began implementing products based on its Boomerang system, a new approach that uses "Content Based Integration" to build IT solutions on aggressive time lines. Boomerang uses an information based approach that revolves around distilling the key factors of any business problem out of data in near real time, and using content management (via RSS and XML) to deliver up to the minute information to leaders and decision makers.
